Hedwig was Harry Potter’s pet the friendly white owl given to him on his eleventh birthday from Hagrid. Hedwig the owl absolutely loved Harry and was his companion throughout the books. Hedwig was Harry’s personal courier as she carried mail and messages back and forth for Harry.

Hedwig the owl was Harry Potter’s pet. Rubeus Hagrid gave Hedwig to Harry on his 11th birthday.. Hedwig was Harry’s friend and companion. According to Harry’s school booklist, Harry was allowed to bring a pet to school as long as it was a cat, toad or owl. Hagrid who was leading him thru Diagon Alley, decided to stop and buy Harry an animal as a birthday gift. Harry told Hagrid that he didn’t want a toad because they were too old fashioned and he would be laughed at. He also didn’t want a cat because he didn’t like them. So Hagrid took Harry to the Owl Emporium and bought him Hedwig, a white snowy owl.

Harry named his owl “Hedwig” after a name he found in his “History of Magic” schoolbook. The schoolbook explained that there was once a Saint Hedwig, who was the Duchess of Silesia and since her death the “Sisters of St. Hedwig” foundation was started with the goal of educating orphaned children like Harry.

Hedwig loved Harry and was affectionate by nibbling his fingers or ear and did whatever Harry asked her to do. In one funny scene Harry asked Hedwig to peck Hermione and Ron until they answered back and she did. Hedwig was very smart and majestic. She hunted rats, mice and frogs. Hedwig often carried mail back and forth for Harry. She was a courier delivering messages to and from Harry.
