About the Harry Potter Sorting Hat

The Sorting Hat is an ancient hat used at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which magically decides which of the four schoolhouses each student will be assigned. The four schoolhouses are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin.

Before the start of the new year and sorting the new students, the sorting hat sings an introductory song. These introductory songs sometimes warn of danger to come but always include a short description of each house.

During the opening formal dinner at the start of the school year, the sorting hat is placed on every 1st year student’s head. The hat will then announce its choice for schoolhouse assignment aloud and the student then joins the chosen house. The Harry Potter Sorting Hat speaks to each student while they are wearing the hat and is willing to take the student’s wishes into consideration when it makes its decision.

When Harry Potter was a first-year student, the sorting hat had a hard time placing him into a house. The sorting hat almost put Harry in the Slytherin house before Harry requested ardently not to be. The sorting hat instead placed Harry into Gryffindor, the house his mother and father belonged to. J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books stated that the reason for the sorting hat’s indecision as to which house to place him into was because the hat sensed part of Voldemort’s soul within Harry.
