Quidditch Costumes are Hot for Halloween!

Quidditch is a imaginary sport unique to the Harry Potter book series. Quidditch is a very popular semi-contact sport played by witches and wizards around the world. The game is played by two teams of seven people flying on broomsticks, using four balls (a Golden Snitch, a Quaffle and 2 Bludgers) and six elevated ring-shaped goals.

Quidditch Robes:

There are some awesome Quidditch robes available. We found two Quidditch robes online that are long crimson red robes with hoods, yellow stripes down the sides, a Gryffindor crest and front laces.

About Quidditch:

Quidditch is a magical sport played by witches and wizards around the world. The goal of the game is to score more points than the opposing team. Each goal is worth ten points and catching the Golden Snitch is worth 150 points. The game is concluded when someone catches the Golden Snitch or an agreement between captains is made.

The game is played by two teams of seven witches and wizards. There are three chasers who score goals with the Quaffle, two Beaters who keep the Bludgers away from their team mates, one Keeper who guards the goal posts and one Seeker who catches the Golden Snitch. The game also uses four balls (one quaffle, two bludgers and one golden snitch).

The Quidditch game begins with the referee throwing all four balls from the middle circle. The time it takes to play a game of Quidditch is variable, some games going on for many days if the Golden Snitch is not caught. Chasers can score by sending the Quaffle through the goal hoops.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Quidditch is the Golden Snitch. Quidditch players used to chase a real bird named a Snidget but with the popularity of Quidditch the Snidget population became almost extinct. As an alternative to the bird, a fake Snidget was invented and called the Golden Snitch. It is a golden ball with silver wings, bewitched to follow the same flight patterns as the Snidget bird. The ball was also charmed to stay within in the playing field.

Hermione Costumes are popular Harry Potter costumes for Halloween 2012!

Hermione Granger is Harry Potter and Ron Weasley’s best friend at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft. She also belongs to the Gryffindor House with Harry and Ron. Hermione is an academically gifted student who excelled in her classes at Hogwarts.

It is easy to put together great Hermione costumes. Here are some ideas.

Gryffindor Robe
Hermione Granger along with Harry Potter and Ron Weasley all belong to the House of Gryffindor and wear the Gryffindor robe. There are some great options for authentic Gryffindor robes in both child and adult sizes. They come with the Gryffindor crest embroidered on them for authenticity. If you don’t have a official Gryffindor robe, you can use a black robe and print off a copy of the Gryffindor crest from the internet and use an iron on to iron it to your robe.

Gryffindor Cardigan
Hermione also wears a grey cardigan. Either the robe or cardigan would make a great costume. We found this Hermione Granger cardigan and tie combo that looks great.

Gryffindor Tie & Scarf
The Gryffindor House colors are scarlet and gold and students are required to wear house ties. There are some great options available for Gryffindor ties and scarves and we have found a few below we think are great. You could also make your own Gryffindor tie and/or scarf by buying some scarlet red felt fabric at your local craft store and then painting on gold stripes with gold paint.

Hermione Wand
All respectable witches carry a magic wand and Hermione is no different. We found this wand that is a replica of the wand Hermione uses in the Harry Potter movies.

Hermione Hair Style
Hermione has long sandy blond hair. If you don’t have her hair type you can buy a sandy blond wig to match her style. Here is an actual “Hermione” wig we found and there are lots of other wig options online.

Little Details – Hermione is a brilliant student and absolutely loves reading and learning. To add a little detail to your costume you could carry around a book that you put a custom cover on with a title like “Magic Spells”.

Dress up in a Ron Weasley Costume, Harry Potter’s Best Friend this Halloween!

Ron Weasley is Harry Potter’s best friend and one of the main characters in the Harry Potter series. Ron is also the best friend of Hermione Granger and along with her and Harry, he is a member of the house of Gryffindor.

Creating a Ron Weasley costume is a fun way to dress up for Halloween. If you have a group, each person can dress as a different Harry Potter character and Ron is a fun costume to create.

You will need the following for your Ron Weasley costume:

• A red-hair wig – If you don’t already have red hair you can pick up a red wig at a local costume store or online.

• A Gryffindor robe – Ron, Harry and Hermione all wear the traditional Gryffindor robe. There are some really great Gryffindor robes available online for this Halloween. We found the following Gryffindor robes in both the kids and adult sizes. If you don’t want to buy a Gryffindor robe, any black robe would work and you could print out the Gryffindor crest on your computer and get iron-on transfer paper and iron one onto the robe.

• Ron’s Wand – Ron always carries a magical wand. We found this replica of Ron’s wand used in the Harry Potter movies. It fits the bill perfectly.

About Ron Weasley:

Ron Weasley is one of the main characters in the Harry Potter series. He is best friends with Harry Potter and Hermione Granger. He is tall and thin with blue eyes, freckles and big feet and hands and a long nose. He has red hair a notable characteristic of the Weasley family.

Ron is a funny character but tends to be immature and somewhat insensitive. Ron does have many strengths and magical abilities. He is great at playing Wizard’s Chess and was the one who taught Harry to play. He is a good tactical thinker and is very creative. It was Ron that came up with the idea to use Felix Felicis to get Slughorn’s memory of telling Riddle about the Horcruxes and to go into the Chamber of Secrets to get Basilisk fangs to destroy the Horcurxes. Ron is also accomplished at dueling. He has the ability of producing a full Patronus which takes the form of a Jack Russell Terrier.

Gryffindor is one of the Houses in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was founded by Godric Gryffindor. Its colors are gold and scarlet and its coat of arms is a lion. The house ghost is “Nearly Headless Nick”. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley all belong to Gryffindor House.

Here are some great Gryffindor costume ideas.

A Gryffindor costume is really easy to make. You will need a black robe and now they make Gryffindor black robes with the official Gryffindor crest on them that are really cool. They come in both adult and child sizes. A Gryffindor tie is a must and they come in a couple different versions. You could also make a Gryffindor tie by cutting a tie shape from scarlet color fabric and painting gold stripes on them. Pair with a Gryffindor scarf to keep you toasty warm while trick or treating and you are set to go!

About Gryffindor House:

Gryffindor House is one of the Houses at Hogwarts. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are all residents of Gryffindor House. Its coat of arms is scarlet and gold and a golden lion. Gryffindor’s house ghost is Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington (“Nearly Headless Nick”). The location is in Gryffindor tower on the seventh floor.

The entrance to Gryffinor House is hidden behind a painting of a Fat Lady wearing a pink dress. You have to tell her the correct password and then the painting swings open to allow access to a round opening in the wall. The main room has a fireplace, tables and lounge chairs. The Gryffindor fireplace is connected to the Floo Network but Gryffindor students prefer to use messenger owls to communicate with their families. An interesting feature of Gryffindor House is its staircases leading to the girls and boys dormitories. To keep the boys from entering the girls dormitory, the staircase is under a spell. If a boy tries to climb the girls staircase a siren will go off and the staircase will temporarily turn itself into a slide made of stone causing the boy and anyone else on the staircase to slide to the bottom.

Gryffindor House encourages the traits of courage, chivalry, daring and nerve and its members are regarded as brave. Dumbledore’s army and the Order of the Phoenix have many members that originated from the Gryffindor House.

Draco Malfoy is a pure-blood wizard who is a student of the Slytherin house at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is Harry Potter’s arch-enemy at the Hogwarts School. Draco is the son of Lucius Malfoy, a death eater.

Here is how to create a Draco Malfoy Costume:

Slytherin Robe – there are quite a few great options for Slytherin robes and accessories this year. You can find Slytherin robes with the Slytherin crest embroidered on them or just use a dark colored robe that you have or make.

Slytherin Accessories – Draco Malfoy is a die hard Slytherin and proudly wears the Slytherin colors of green and silver. Death Eaters have a dark mark on their left arm, a sign put on them by Lord Voldemort so he could summon them to him instantly. They wear black hooded robes and skull masks, sometimes pointed hats and carry wands.

Dress up in a Hagrid Costume, the lovable Keeper of the Keys & Grounds at Hogwarts!

Hagrid is the half-giant who is the Keeper of the Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts. He is called a half-giant because he is about twelve feet tall and extremely strong. Because Hagrid is so large and strong he is protected from many physical injuries and spells. Hagrid may look aggressive, but he is one of the most caring and soft-hearted people in Harry Potter. He is one of Dumbledore’s most trusted friends.

How to Make a Hagrid Costume:

• Find a Hagrid mask or a wig with a big bushy beard and long hair. Long, wild and bushy hair is one of Hagrid’s most distinguishing features.

• Hagrid’s clothes are groundskeepers clothes so he wears work boots and work clothes. You can buy larger sizes and stuff the clothes with pillows.

• Hagrid’s large coat with lots of pockets. Hagrid’s coat has tons of pockets and he carries an assortment of items in his pockets. On one occasion he even pulled Harry’s birthday cake out from under his coat.

• Carry a pink umbrella as a wand. When Hagrid was expelled and outlawed from doing magic his wand was snapped into two pieces. He later reassembled the wand pieces and hid them inside a pink umbrella so he could still practice magic.

• Carry a magical creature with you. Hagrid is extremely interested in all types of creatures. Because he is extremely strong is able to handle dangerous creatures without any troubles. He has a dragon, a boar hound and a hellhound.

About Rubeus Hagrid:

Rubeus Hagrid is the Keeper of the Keys and Grounds at Hogwart’s School. He is a half-giant that stands about twelve feet tall and is extremely strong. He has tough skin that protects him from injuries and magical spells. He looks intimidating but is one of the most caring and soft-hearted characters in Harry Potter.

Hagrid was born to a giant mother and a wizard father, which makes him a half-giant. He is twice as tall as the average man and five times as wide. He has long wild looking black hair and a big beard that covers the majority of his face. Hagrid’s hands are said to be as big as trash can lids and his feet like baby dolphins. Hagrid often wears a very large coat with many pockets that he holds many different things.

Early on, he was accused of and expelled for opening the Chamber of Secrets. He was outlawed from doing magic and his magical wand was snapped into two pieces. He later patched the two pieces back together and hid them inside of a pink umbrella so he could still practice magic. Because the wand was snapped in half the spells that he casts are not of the best quality.

Hagrid loves all creatures, the more interesting the better. Hagrid takes care of a lot of pets, many of them dangerous.

Dress up in a prim and proper Professor McGonagall Costume this Halloween!

Minerva McGonagall is the Gryffindor House, Deputy Headmistress who is known for being prim and proper. She is known for being one of the few Animagi of the century, being able to take the form of a silver tabby cat at will.

How to make a great McGonagall Costume:

• Wear your hair in a tight bun or wear a dark wig pulled back in a bun. McGonagall has black hear and typically wears it in a tight bun.

• Wear square glasses – McGonagall wears square glasses that match the markings around the eyes of a silver tabby cat.

• Wear Emerald green robe – McGonagall is often seen in flowing emerald green robes, however, a black robe is much easier to find and would work as well.

• A Pointed Hat – McGonagall always wears a pointed hat. We found a new McGonagall hat for Halloween 2009 that was from the movie Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince. Either pointed hat would work great.

Carry a Wand – she always carried a magical wand with her.

About Minerva McGonagall:

Professor McGonagall is the Deputy Headmistress for the Gryffindor House of Hogwarts. She is tall and proper looking with black hair worn back in a bun, square glasses, emerald green robes and a pointed hat. She is renowned for being an Animagus, which means she can take the form of a silver tabby cat at will.

McGonagall was usually very prim and stern and was respected and even feared by nearly all students at Hogwarts. As a professor, she was very strict and did not allow talking or laughing from her students. She is very smart and a passionate Quidditch fan. She also absolutely loved cats and wearing tartan plaid.

McGonagall had many talents and strengths. She was an expert duelist and accomplished at holding back death eaters as well as dueling with Snape. She was also a transfiguration master. She taught transfiguration and demonstrated her magical ability by turning desks and amour to help defend the school. She also had the rare ability to turn herself into a tabby cat. She often did this when she wished to be anonymous and unseen. She also was able to create a Patronus which takes the form of a cat.

Adults & Children can dress up in Dementor Costumes, the scary creatures from Harry Potter!

Dementors are some of the scariest creatures from Harry Potter. They are considered the foulest creatures that walk the earth. Dementors feed off of human happiness, peace and hope causing despair and depression to anyone near them.

There are some great options for Dementor costumes this Halloween 2012! With the new movie Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince some new costumes have come out.

To easily make a complete costume they have full Dementor costumes available that come with long black robes, chest pieces and masks. They also have Dementor gloves that look like Dementor hands to make your Dementor costumes even more authentic.

Adult Dementor Costumes:

New this year for Halloween they have “Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince” Deluxe Dementor Adult Masks. The new masks are full over the head masks with mesh covering the eyes, very realistic.

Adult costumes also feature a full black robe, chest piece and mask. The Dementor gloves are also available for adults as well.

About Dementors:

Dementors are dark creatures that feed off of human joy, happiness and hope. If they get close to a person they drain all of their happiness and cause depression and are capable of consuming a person’s soul. Dementors once were the guardians of Azkaban until they defected to Lord Voldemort’s side. Dementors are not loyal to any one side except to the side that provides them with the most souls.

Dementors have a humanish shape and wear dark robes with hoods. The Dementor bodies are decayed and their faces just have a hole where their mouth should be that they use for sucking the soul out of victims. Dementors are blind so they sense and feed on positive emotions, good memories and happiness. When a Dementor is near the atmosphere grows dark and cold. Dementors are generally unable to tell the difference in humans. They also have a hard time sensing animals because their emotions are more primitive in nature. Dementors are immortal so there are only a few ways to ward off a Dementor. One way is to use the Patronus Charm to push them away. If you have mild contact chocolate is an effective way to feel better.

This Halloween dress up in a Dobby Costume – the lovable house-elf and friend of Harry Potter!

Dobby is a lovable house-elf that once belonged to the Malfoy family. In the 2nd year at Hogwarts Harry Potter freed Dobby from the Malfoy’s and he then went on to work in the Hogwart’s kitchen. Being an elf, Dobby was shorter than most humans, standing about three and a half feet tall. He had large, ball like eyes and long, pointed ears. Before Harry freed him, he wore a pillowcase and loved socks, especially if they were unmatched.

Adult Dobby Costume

Adults can make great Dobby costume with a latex Dobby mask and latex Dobby hands like these. This Dobby mask has molded facial features and eye holes underneath the Dobby eyes.

To complete the costume adults can wear a white or tan robe or cut a hole in the middle of some white sheets and layer them on top of one another. To make your robe or white sheets look tattered and old you can wad them up and get them dirty, cut holes in them or stain them in the wash machine by soaking them in black tea (lots of it). Be sure to carry a sock with you!

Children can make a great Dobby Costume by cutting arm holes in a white or tan king size pillow case and wearing one of the Dobby latex masks. To make the pillowcase look old and tattered you can stain it by soaking it in black tea and then wash it, wad it up and cut or tear holes in it. Be sure to carry a sock with you!

About Dobby

Dobby was the house-elf of the Malfoy family. Dobby tried to warn Hary Potter in his second year at Hogwarts that he knew that Lucius Malfoy had plans to re-open the “Chamber of Secrets” using the school diary of Tom Riddle. That same year, Harry Potter freed Dobby from the Malfoy family. Dobby then started working in the Hogwart’s kitchen. Dobby was a kind elf and saved the lives of Harry Potter and his friends Ron, Hermione, Dean, Luna, and others from Death Eaters.
